The place

A vineyard, a
brewery, and a

Gold Hill sits at 5660 Vineyard Lane, off Cold Springs Road between Placerville and Coloma — the stretch of foothill country where the Gold Rush started. The tasting room deck looks out over the vines to the American River canyon, with Mt. Murphy topping the scenery.

Two things are poured here. Estate wine — Rhône whites, Bordeaux reds, a zinfandel port — and beer brewed on site by Gold Hill Brewery in traditional styles. You can taste both at the same bar, on the same afternoon, looking at the same hill.

Open Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Appointments are accepted for other days.

The wines

Whites aged in stainless and French oak, Bordeaux and Rhône reds, a Barbera rosato for summer, and a zinfandel port for after dinner. Bottle prices below; every wine is $15 by the glass in the tasting room.

2023 Viognier

This white Rhone classic is fruit forward with hints of pear & grapefruit, a perfect compliment to any white meat. Light and refreshing!

2023 Chardonnay

Aged in stainless steel, this is a refreshingly crisp & fruity Chardonnay with notes of green apple and pineapple.

2023 Reserve Chardonnay

Aged in French Oak for 18 months, this Chardonnay has a gentle mouth feel with hints of apple and butter. It is kissed with the perfect amount of oak.

2023 Barbera Rosato

2019 Mourvedre

Our debut Mourvedre is a delightful Rhone varietal with a big nose of ripe black fruit and spice. The palate is full of flavors of black cherry, blackberry and a slight earthiness.

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon

Two-plus years’ aging in French oak barrels helps accentuate the black cherry and cedar nose. Plum, cherry, and vanilla on the palate.

2022 Barbera

Packed with ripe berry and spice notes, this Italian varietal is great paired with hearty pasta dishes and game meats.

2020 Zinfandel

This Zin is full of complex flavors of berries and spices. Light-bodied enough to drink on its own or pair with a nice pasta.

Zinfandel Port 375ml

A luscious, fruit-forward port, with hints of fresh raspberries, currant and chocolate. Wonderful as an after-dinner cordial, served with a cheese plate or paired with the deepest, darkest chocolates.

Also poured: Merlot, Malbec, Syrah and a California Champagne. Case discounts — 5% off six bottles, 10% off a case, 15% off three cases or more. Wine club members take 20% off everything, four releases a year, plus two appreciation dinners at no cost to members.

49’er Red
5.7% ABV

American Amber. Medium, full-body ale, with a soft malty sweetness, followed by moderate caramel flavors. Late-hop additions give that distinct West Coast hop aroma and flavor. Best Red Ale in California, Honorable Mention — California State Fair, 2011

Boomtown IPA
6.5% ABV

Brewed with Nugget, Zythos, Columbus, and Chinook hops. Well-balanced between malt and hops with a fresh hop aroma of citrus, and pine, and subtle tropical fruit notes in the background. After all, this is a West Coast IPA.

Gold Trail Pale Ale
5.7% ABV

A nice up-front maltiness followed by a clean-dry finish. Hops include both the familiar cascade hops, for a citrusy, West Coast twist, combined with a generous addition of traditional English Fuggles hops, for an earthy/floral balance.

Old Miner’s Scotch
4.7% ABV

Scottish Export 80/+. Long, cool fermentations create a clean malty beer, tilted toward the malt side with enjoyable caramel/toffee notes which come from kettle caramelization, induced by a lengthy boil.

Hank’s Porter
6.7% ABV

A medium body dark beer with an enjoyable chocolate quality, complimented by rich coffee flavors and nutty overtones. Named for the founder of Gold Hill Brewery, it offers a surprisingly dry finish — as easy drinking on a warm summer day as a cool winter evening.

Weddings & events

Two hundred
people, and the
whole canyon.

The Winery Lodge is a 2,500 square foot banquet hall with a 1,500 square foot deck overlooking the vineyard and the American River canyon. It seats up to 100 inside with room for 100 more on the deck — a 50 ft service bar, a kitchenette for your caterer, a changing room, accessible entrances and restrooms, and parking for 100 cars.

Down at the lower pond is an entirely outdoor setting: wedding deck, bar, dance floor, stage for a band or DJ, and its own changing room. Gold Hill can point you to photographers, florists, rentals, caterers, DJs, musicians, lodging — even horse-drawn carriage services.

From Sacramento: Hwy 50 to Shingle Springs, over the highway, first right on N. Shingle Rd. Go 4.5 miles, left on Lotus Rd; 3.3 miles, right on Gold Hill Rd; 2.8 miles, left on Cold Springs Rd; 1.6 miles to the vineyard.

From I‑80: Hwy 49 south through Auburn, 18 miles down the grade through Coloma State Park, off Hwy 49 onto Cold Springs Rd — follow the sign reading “Gold Hill 3 miles.”
